Group of students from the Brazilian Cartography Olympiad visits Ciências do Mar III

On February 10, the research vessel was visited by a group of 20 students and 5 finalist professors from the Brazilian Cartography Olympiad (OBRAC). The main objective of OBRAC is to disseminate the Cartographic Science, fundamental and strategic for the country, and to awaken student’s curiosity and interest in Cartography with a focus on spatial knowledge for citizenship, through challenging activities that stimulate learning and spatial thinking. The target audience is high school and 9th grade elementary school students (aged 13 to 19) from public and private schools – urban and rural. The visit was coordinated by Prof. Dr. Angelica Carvalho Di Maio, from the Department of Geoenvironmental Analysis at the Fluminense Federal University. During the visit, the students were introduced to the research equipment installed on the ship and the research activities that can be carried out. Navigation equipment and GPS positioning were also introduced. The participants were able to perceive the importance that the accuracy of the positioning of the vessel has for this type of work, since at sea there are no references to help in the location of the ship.
