CIAGA visits Ciências do Mar IIII

On September 28, the Commander of the CIAGA (Almirante Graça Aranha Instruction Center), Rear Admiral Paulo Ruiz, and a team of professors, visited the UFF research and training ship, the Ciências do Mar III. The institution is a military organization of the Brazilian Navy, being responsible for training, improvement and updating courses for Merchant Navy professionals. The visit aimed to learn more about the vessel’s resources in order to evaluate its use for practical classes and on board activities by students of the Merchant Navy Officers Training School (EFOMM). An integral part of CIAGA, EFOMM is a University of the Sea, and a reference center for training young officers in Brazil’s Merchant Navy as well as other countries in South and Central America, and parts of Africa. The course has in its curriculum several practical and on-board activities in the areas of navigation and machinery that are normally carried out on ships of the Navy. However, the demand is quite high for the current availability of vacancies. UFF, as operator of the Ciências do Mar III, understands that it is its mission to extend the use of the ship to all institutions linked to the formation of human resources in the area of science of the sea. In addition, this partnership with CIAGA will strengthen both institutions, with exchanges of knowledge and professional experiences that will make their graduates better educated and better prepared to work in the job market. During the visit, several of the ship’s crew, who had taken the CIAGA courses, had the opportunity to speak about the importance of the school in their carees and were motivated by the possibility of partnership.
